Process reasoning
DAF introduces fine air bubbles that attach to suitable solids or droplets and help them rise for removal. A decanter relies on centrifugal sedimentation and mechanical solids conveyance. Feed chemistry, density and floc behaviour affect each process differently. A wastewater clarification target is not equivalent to a sludge cake target, even when both projects are described as solids removal. Chemical addition and the resulting sludge volume belong in the overall evaluation.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE
Apply the reasoning
A food plant removes fats and suspended material using flotation. The collected float sludge then needs volume reduction before off-site disposal. Quoting a decanter against the raw wastewater flow can misstate the duty; the relevant decanter feed may be the much smaller but concentrated sludge stream. Characterize that stream, including variability and conditioning response, before requesting a machine size.
What to record
| Item | Basis to document |
|---|---|
| Incoming stream | Raw wastewater, float sludge or mixed sludge? |
| Desired outlet | Clarified water, concentrated sludge or transportable cake? |
| Chemical boundary | Upstream coagulant/flocculant plus dewatering chemicals |
| Recycle effect | Return liquor can add load to the treatment plant |
Review checklist
- Draw the treatment sequence and identify the actual sampling point.
- Separate water-treatment performance from sludge-dewatering performance.
- Measure solids mass rather than relying only on volumetric flow.
- Include return streams and chemical dilution water.
Your next decision
Compare complete treatment duties and request separate acceptance criteria where the stages have different functions. For a HUADA sludge package, supply properties of the proposed dewatering feed and identify how it was produced. A flotation stage and a centrifuge stage should each be justified by their contribution to the final water and solids objectives.
