How sludge storage and ageing can change a dewatering trial

Sludge collected for a trial can change during storage, so test results should include its age and handling history. A sample transported for several days may no longer behave like the fresh feed to the operating plant.

Process reasoning

Settling, biological activity, temperature change, gas formation and changes in floc structure can affect apparent concentration and conditioning response. Mixing a stored container restores uniformity only partially; it cannot necessarily reverse chemical or biological changes. The effect is material-specific. Do not assume that an old sample is always harder or easier to dewater. Document the state and compare it with a fresh reference when the decision warrants it.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE

Apply the reasoning

An illustrative plant sends a sample on Monday and the test occurs on Friday. The report says only municipal sludge at 3% solids. Without storage temperature, mixing history and a fresh-feed comparison, a poor result may reflect either the plant duty or sample ageing. Agree an acceptable holding time with the test laboratory and record any deviations before interpreting the data.

What to record

ItemBasis to document
CollectionProcess source, date, time and operating condition
StorageTemperature range, vessel and duration
HandlingMixing, dilution and transfers
Test stateSolids, temperature, appearance and conditioning response

Review checklist

  • Use a sample plan agreed with the receiving facility.
  • Record storage conditions and the time to testing.
  • Characterize the feed at the time of the trial.
  • Repeat with fresh material if ageing is a material uncertainty.

Your next decision

For a sludge centrifuge quotation, provide actual plant variability as well as laboratory properties. If storage is part of the future process, test representative stored sludge rather than only fresh sludge. The correct comparison is between the proposed plant feed and the tested feed, with any difference treated as an explicit scale-up limitation.
