FAT and SAT: separate factory checks from process acceptance

Factory acceptance testing, or FAT, and site acceptance testing, or SAT, serve different purposes. A factory test can verify construction, documents, controls and agreed mechanical functions. A site test can verify the installed interfaces and process performance with actual feed and utilities. Define each scope before the equipment is built.

What matters in the process

A dry run cannot prove material-specific moisture, purity or solids capture. Likewise, a successful process trial does not replace dimensional checks, document review or protective-function testing. The acceptance plan should state instruments, test duration, feed conditions, sample methods and who witnesses each item. Open points need an agreed closure process.

A practical example

A centrifuge may pass its factory mechanical run yet encounter a restrictive discharge conveyor at site. The machine result and the integrated-system result must be distinguished. Include relevant pumps, valves, instruments and control interfaces in the site test boundary so responsibility for a failed condition can be traced.

What to check or specify

  • Create separate FAT and SAT checklists.
  • Define process performance conditions and measurement methods.
  • Agree documents, witnesses and open-point handling.
  • Record instrumentation and sampling responsibilities.

Turn the result into a decision

Link payment and acceptance discussions to clear, reviewable milestones rather than vague terms such as successful operation. The final contract and approved test protocol should control. For a complete package, verify both equipment functions and the coordinated process sequence.
