Mineral slurries: separation and abrasion must be designed together

A mineral-slurry centrifuge must meet the separation objective while tolerating the wear imposed by the feed. Particle hardness, concentration, size distribution and impact conditions all influence wear. A high nominal capacity is not useful if the selected arrangement requires unacceptable repair frequency or loses performance as components wear.

What matters in the process

Wear can occur at feed acceleration zones, scroll surfaces, screens and discharge areas, depending on the design. Corrosion and abrasion can occur together, so choosing a material on corrosion resistance alone may be insufficient. Wear protection also affects inspection, replacement access and spare-part planning. The dry-solids load and its variation are essential for assessing both process and mechanical duty.

A practical example

A short trial may demonstrate clarification but reveal little about long-term wear. Combine trial performance with a review of the wear locations, protection method, inspection plan and expected replaceable components. Do not convert an unverified lifetime estimate into a fixed operating-cost guarantee.

What to check or specify

  • Provide mineralogy, hardness and particle distribution.
  • State normal and maximum dry-solids loading.
  • Identify corrosive liquid constituents and temperature.
  • Review wear protection, inspection access and repair methods.

Turn the result into a decision

Ask for a component-level wear strategy and a spare-parts proposal alongside the separation result. Compare LW, LLW or a combined family only where its mechanism matches the material. Include the cost and downtime of maintaining the wear-protected parts in the lifecycle assessment.
