Seals and elastomers in a centrifuge specification

Seals deserve the same process review as metal contact parts. Chemical exposure, temperature, cleaning and movement affect suitability. A seal material that works with the product liquid may respond differently to cleaning chemicals or low-temperature operation. Identify every service condition rather than approving a material name in isolation.

What matters in the process

The required sealing function also varies. A static cover gasket, a rotating shaft arrangement and a contained product-transfer connection have different duties. For specified vapor-tight or gas-tight designs, leakage expectations and the way they will be tested should be defined. A broad statement such as sealed construction does not describe a measurable containment level.

A practical example

A multi-product campaign may switch between aqueous and solvent-based fluids. The cleaning cycle can introduce yet another exposure. Review the full sequence, including temperatures and dwell periods, and confirm whether seal replacement is needed during a product change rather than assuming one compound covers every service.

What to check or specify

  • List process, wash and cleaning-fluid exposures.
  • Specify minimum and maximum temperatures.
  • Define required leakage or containment tests.
  • Identify replacement intervals, access and traceability needs.

Turn the result into a decision

Include a seal schedule in the final documents and keep the approved material references with the spare-parts list. Changes to seal composition or design can affect process safety and cleanliness. Obtain engineering approval for substitutions instead of accepting a dimensionally similar part without verification.
