Residual cake heel: why it matters

A residual cake heel is material remaining after the main discharge. It can influence the next filtration cycle, product recovery, cleaning and campaign changeover. The objective is not always to eliminate every trace mechanically; it is to understand the retained quantity and manage its effect on the process.

What matters in the process

In a scraper centrifuge, clearance and filter-medium protection can leave a retained layer. If it thickens or changes permeability, cycle performance may drift. HUADA PLD adds a bag-moving stage after scraping, while FW uses cloth inversion as a different release concept. Back-blowing and cleaning arrangements may also be relevant, depending on the specified model and material.

A practical example

If 5 kg remains after a 300 kg batch, one batch recovery calculation may look acceptable. Over a campaign, however, the heel may contain older product, change moisture or complicate a product switch. Measure whether the retained amount remains stable, accumulates or is released into a later batch.

What to check or specify

  • Weigh recovered and retained product on a consistent basis.
  • Inspect the cake profile after discharge.
  • Record filtration changes over successive batches.
  • Define cleaning and product-change acceptance criteria.

Turn the result into a decision

Select the discharge concept using representative material. Ask how the remaining heel will be measured and removed, and whether the method affects filter life or particle size. A stated percentage of cake removal should be tied to a test material and procedure before being used as a guarantee.
