What matters in the process
The retained cake may become the main filter after the initial feed period, while the cloth controls the early filtrate and supports the bed. Weave, pore structure and surface characteristics affect both capture and cleaning. The backing screen and attachment method influence support and fit. For moving-bag and inverting-filter designs, flexibility and fatigue during the discharge sequence deserve attention.
A practical example
A trial may show acceptable initial flow followed by a progressive reduction over repeated batches. Changing spin speed will not necessarily resolve a cloth blinded by fines or deposits. Compare cleaning recovery and cloth condition between cycles, and check whether upstream particle-size variation explains the change.
What to check or specify
- Provide chemistry, solvent and temperature conditions.
- Measure filtrate solids from the beginning of feeding.
- Record filtration time over repeated cycles.
- Inspect fit, seams, attachment and product release.
Turn the result into a decision
Include the cloth specification and replacement method in the final technical schedule. Keep tested cloth samples or traceable references so subsequent replacements remain comparable. A change to filter medium should be treated as a process change when product purity, capture or batch time is affected.
