CIP in a centrifuge: access, coverage and verification

Cleaning in place, or CIP, describes a cleaning method; it is not proof that every internal surface is adequately cleaned. The process must address coverage, drainage, retained material, cleaning chemistry and access for inspection. A list of spray nozzles is only one part of a useful cleaning specification.

What matters in the process

The basket, housing, feed system, discharge path and seals can present different cleaning challenges. Product deposits may shield surfaces from spray, while pockets can retain wash liquid. A fully opening cover can improve access for inspection or manual intervention, but it does not remove the need to define routine cleaning and acceptance criteria.

A practical example

For a sticky product, a visually clean housing may coexist with material behind a discharge feature or within the filtering assembly. The verification plan should identify representative difficult locations and a sampling method appropriate to the process. Demonstrate the proposed cleaning sequence on the actual product or a justified representative material.

What to check or specify

  • Define soil, cleaning chemistry and permitted conditions.
  • Review spray coverage and drainage paths.
  • Identify inspection and sampling locations.
  • Set measurable cleaning acceptance criteria.

Turn the result into a decision

Agree which cleaning tests can be completed at the factory and which require the installed process. For pharmaceutical or food duties, retain the project-specific validation responsibility and documentation plan. Avoid replacing a cleaning study with a generic statement that the machine includes CIP.
