What matters in the process
Collect the original design basis, current operating data, equipment condition and actual feed analysis. Compare normal operation with periods of poor performance. Check available space, foundations, power, lifting and discharge interfaces. Retaining existing auxiliaries can reduce project scope, but only if their capacity and condition match the proposed new operating envelope.
A practical example
If a plant has doubled dry-solids concentration without increasing liquid flow, an apparent separation problem may be a solids-transport limitation. A replacement sized from the unchanged m³/h figure could repeat the same mistake. Evaluate torque, product quality and downstream handling alongside the feed data.
What to check or specify
- Provide the original nameplate, drawings and design duty.
- Document current constraints with measured trends.
- Review structural, electrical and process interfaces.
- Define outage duration and commissioning responsibilities.
Turn the result into a decision
Ask for an explicit retain/modify/replace schedule covering the whole system. Identify which benefits are supported by tests and which depend on site changes. A retrofit proposal should explain both the improved behaviour and the interfaces that must be corrected to achieve it.
