What matters in the process
Where washing removes soluble species from a filter cake, evaluate residual impurity against wash volume, contact conditions and product loss. Fine or compressible solids may show slow filtration or retained liquid. Product-contact materials, wear debris and seal arrangements should be reviewed in relation to the contamination limits. Particle-size preservation must be assessed through the complete handling route.
A practical example
A trial may achieve a low impurity concentration in a small sample but require an impractical wash volume or long cycle. Record dry product recovered per hour together with the impurity result. Also analyse the wash filtrate where valuable metals or product components may be lost.
What to check or specify
- Provide chemistry and individual impurity limits.
- Describe particle morphology and fragility.
- Define wash liquid and acceptable product loss.
- Specify contamination-control and cleaning requirements.
Turn the result into a decision
PLD, horizontal peeler and other families should be shortlisted from representative filtration tests. Request repeatability across several cycles and a documented wash balance. The final proposal should distinguish proven process results from design options still requiring confirmation.
