What matters in the process
If feed density is ρ kg/m³, volume flow is Q m³/h and dry-solids mass fraction is x, the dry-solids flow is Q × ρ × x kg/h. A volume-percent value cannot simply replace a mass fraction. As concentration changes, scroll torque, cake discharge, wash demand and cleaning frequency may change even if the pump holds a constant volumetric rate.
A practical example
For an illustrative 20 m³/h feed at 1,050 kg/m³ and 5 wt% dry solids, the dry-solids load is 1,050 kg/h. At 10 wt%, the load doubles to 2,100 kg/h without any increase in volume flow. A conveyor sized only for the original wet-cake flow may become the bottleneck before the centrifuge reaches its hydraulic limit.
What to check or specify
- State the concentration basis: mass or volume.
- Provide feed density at operating temperature.
- Report normal and maximum dry-solids loads.
- Calculate cake and liquid outlet flows on the same basis.
Turn the result into a decision
Request a performance envelope instead of one capacity number. The quotation should distinguish the feed conditions supporting the stated flow, the maximum solids-handling requirement and any downstream equipment limits. This also creates a clearer basis for acceptance testing.
